I Hate Dentists!

Last Friday, I had my wisdom tooth taken out. Um.. Actually, there were two of them: the one on the upper right and the one on the lower right.

I only planed to pull out the lower right one, but the dentist in NTU Hospital told me that all of my wisdom teeth grew the wrong way! That is, I have to pull out all of my four wisdom teeth! OH MY! We then decided to pull out the upper right one and the lower right one on that day. JESUS!!

Before long, I was asked to lie on the chair. Believe me, no matter how tired I am, I'll never lie on that horrible chair actively! Soon, the dentist showed up. I was glad that there was an experienced dentist in charge of my operation, but I soon regretted. I found out that "Inexperienced = Gentle", and "Experienced = Rude"!! He was like dealing with something he hated! Hello! Those were my teeth!!

It took him almost an hour to finish this operation, which he thought should only take him less than half an hour. After his TORTURE, I finally could get up from that cold chair. Since then, I have a puffed right cheek and a normal left cheek. It makes me look like a silly clown. And most importantly, I have difficulty eating or chewing! The only thing I can do is drinking. It drives me crazy!! I hope I will be able to eat normally pretty soon.

"My dear dear delicacies! Wait for me!!"

My Wisdom Tooth

After a careful examination of my teeth, my dentist told me that I don't have any decayed tooth in my mouth, which was a good news to me. But she then told me that there IS something wrong with my wisdom tooth...

It is really a naughty tooth. It doesn't want to follow the path it should be; instead, it appeared in a strange way. It almost lies down and therefore pushes the tooth in front of it, which is the reason why I had a terrible toothache. The dentist also told me that I must pull out this tooth because the angle it makes will keep it from growing out of the gums (牙齦), which means that even though the tooth has finally finished growing, it is still in the gums. I don't even want to imagine this picture!!

Anyway, I have to face the music that I have to pull out this tooth. Many of my senior high school classmates have already experienced this operation (the dentists do call this an OPERATION because it's not an easy job). And believe me, that was really a miserable life. I made an appointment this Friday (which also means I won't be present in English class) because mom said I could have a better rest on Saturday and Sunday. Well, I can do nothing about it. I think I need some good luck...

Here's the X-RAY of my wisdom tooth and the teeth near it.

Christmas

I'm not a Christian. To me, Christmas is just another day for businessmen to make more and more money!

Every year from the first day of December, you can see all kinds of merchandise or sales promotion related to Christmas, such as "Christmas Dolls" from convenience stores, "Christmas Special Meal" from restaurants, "Christmas Discounts" from bookstores, department stores and so on. Every store tries their best to catch consumers' attention and persuades them to spend as much money as they can.

I have heard that people in Western countries are more addicted to "Christmas Sales" in December because they have a long vacation for Christmas and New Year. They even think it essential for a whole family to decorate Christmas trees together. I love the idea of gathering all the family members on this holiday - just like the Moon Festival in Taiwan - it is a yearly reunion for them.

I wanted to spend my Christmas Eve (12/24) and Christmas Day (12/25) with my mom, but she had to work late. To make things worse, I had to work (a part-time job) on Christmas Day, too! So if you ask me what I've done on Christmas, my answer would definitely be "Making money!".

Toothache

Ouch! It' hurts! I'm not sure if there's something called "decayed tooth" in my mouth (what a shame...) or my wisdom tooth can't wait to meet the world... No matter what the answer is, I don't like this feeling at all!! It is definitely a barrier to delicacies!! Oh no!!!!

Scholarship :)

Congratulations to me! I got my first scholarship in my freshman year! Well, it's not because I did a great job in my economics or calculus exams (of course not) but because that I passed the GEPT High-Intermediate exam. I passed the exam last year, and I think that I was on the summit if my "English Ability Pyramid", because we had to take hundreds if thousands of quizzes everyday at that time. I even think that I may not be able to pass the exam now...

Anyway, I'm glad that I decided to take the exam and passed it so that I could get this scholarship. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the money. Maybe I'll go to a bookstore in these days and buy some English books to improve my English ability more.

A Creative Person I Admire

"In music, you just can't escape when something is beautiful," Ray Charles once said.

Ray Charles Robinson (September 23, 1930 ~ June 10, 2004), was a legendary singer, pianist, and composer. He was such a creative person that I can't help falling into his music!

Ray had a hard time in his childhood. His mother died when he was young, and he lost his sight at the age of seven, but these events didn't keep him away from his talent.
He broke so many rules of music at that time. Country, blues, jazz, R&B and even funk, Ray has set the standards of them for more than five decades. He devoted himself to create new music styles. Ray has released over 250 albums, and many of them are top sellers in a variety of musical genres. He also won many awards due to his dedication to music.
Even though Ray has passed away for 3 years and no more music pieces will come out; but to me, he is definitely a creative person that will never be forgotten.

I'm Out of Time!!

I need more time! I need more than 24 hours a day! I have plenty of things to do but never have enough time to finish them!

I used to be the kind of girl who always finishes doing everything before going to bed and always be in time for school or any appointment. But now I'm usually in a rush, and being late has become a part of my daily routine. I even become a forgetful person for that I don't have time to memorize things, although I think it's a ridiculous excuse.

Few weeks ago, someone asked me, "What do you usually do on weekends?" To my surprise, I don't know the answer either. I think it's time for my self-examination. I should learn to be a time controller instead of being controlled by time. I want to finish all the things written on my schedule book as soon as possible!

SAY NO TO BEING THE SLAVE OF TIME!

Music and Me

To me, music is the spice of life. Without it, my life will not be as rich as it is now. I have learned a musical instrument - electone, or keyboard, since I was seven. And I'm sure it has made a great impact on me.

Inevitably, I encountered some difficulties and was frustrated on my learning when I was about ten. I even wanted to stop learning this musical instrument. However, my mom kept encouraging me not to give up. When I look back now, I'm glad that I decided to take her advice.

The reason why my mom sent me to a "electone" class instead of a piano class is because that she thought it is much more interesting to play the "electone" than to play the piano, and she was right! I'm not interested in classical music at all (I have no idea what the composers are trying to convey to us!)!!

I love rock music, and LINKIN PARK is one of my favorite groups. In fact, I used to hate this kind of music, because I thought it was nothing but noise. But I then realized that there are always something meaningful in their lyrics, such as the song What I've Done of LINKIN PARK: "So let mercy come and wash away what I've done. I'll face myself to cross out what I've become. Erase myself and let go of what I've done...". This music video contains lots of hot issues: poverty gap, starving, war, terrorism, racial discrimination, global warming, and so on. I feel very depressed every time when I see this music video. I had exactly the same feeling when I saw the BLUE MAN performance few weeks ago...

After Midterm

Finally! It's been a tiring week since there are so so many exams! Well, I don't want to talk about the midterm anymore, but I would like to talk about my plans AFTER the midterm.

Recently, my mom bought an English novel called "The Devil Wears Prada", which was a popular movie few months ago. Mom said it's an interesting novel because there are many useful phrases and modern terms which we can learn. She also mentioned that it's much more interesting to learn new phrases through MODERN novels than through OLD TIME stories. I agree with her, so I'll try that book pretty soon (after she finishes reading that book, of course).

Before reading "The Devil Wears Prada", I would like to try another book first. "The magician's Nephew" is one of the "Narnia" series. Narnia was also a movie few years ago. It's a kind of fiction story based on magic, adventure, love, and so on. I didn't see this movie at that time, but I happened to saw it on TV yesterday. It reminds me of a good friend who likes this movie very much and persuaded me into seeing this movie for many times. I'm not really interested in it, but I think it's time to give it a try. Maybe I'll find myself addicted to it, too! (I didn't buy this book; instead, I borrowed it from a library.)

HW4

Part I. About the Bluemen performance

A. Transcribe the complete text.

Your attention please. Thank you for choosing Earth as your planetary vehicle. We hope you enjoy the many wonderful features of this planet as you hurtle through the cosmos. Please note, however, that in the event of continued inaction in the face of global warming, your seat cushion can be used as a flotation device. Also, please take a moment to locate this planet's emergency exists. As you can see, there aren't any. Earth. To America! Can you hear? Sending out a message loud and clear. Can you hear?

B. What do you think of this performance?

What a brilliant performance! I have heard of this group, BLUE MAN, a few years ago. I was impressed when I saw their performance at the very first time. It is not until today do I realize that they bring not only entertainment but also education to us. I love the idea of using things like tubes to make strong beats, which I think is also appeal to everyone. "Global Warming" is a global crisis which everyone knows but pays little attention to. They choose this theme as their topic in order to catch the viewers' attention, so that everyone could face this problem again seriously and try to do something about it.

Part II. About global citizenship

A. In what ways do you think you are already a global citizen?

Through the innovation of new technologies, such as the Internet and communications satellites, the whole world becomes a "Global Village". It's convenient to catch up with the world's latest event by using these inventions. I don't always have time to watch TV news, but I'll glance at the headlines on the homepage of YAHOO website. In this way, I can at least get a superficial view of the world affairs. Therefore, I think I'm already a global citizen.

B. How can you become a better global citizen?

Whenever I think of those homeless polar bears in the North Pole(because the glaciers melt away swiftly), I do my best to save this planet. I turnoff the lights as soon as I leave the room, reuse things that can be used again, reduce the amount of the wastes I make, and so on. I'll also try to remind my family and my friends of the seriousness of global warming. As long as everyone bears the responsibility of saving this planet, I believe the world will become better and better.

It's Freezing

The weather in 三峽 is so extreme.

Our Chinese teacher said that the wind here is so strong that the elevator doors can hardly be closed some time! I haven't seen that "amazing" scene yet, but I did experienced something today. When we were taking Chinese class this morning, the two classroom doors opened automatically during the class because the wind was so so strong that it blew the door opened!! I was astonished because the doors are really heavy! Sometimes it feels like there are typhoons everyday!

In addition, I hate raining all day long. I don't like the feeling of wearing "wet" pants or jeans. Rainy days always make my lovely shoes dirty. Many of my shoes are colored by blue jeans (because they are wet), which makes me very unpleasant. Besides, it feels even colder while raining and after raining. I think buying more jackets and coats is essential to me!

Due to these reasons, I caught a cold. Having a headache, snuffle, sore throat, and running nose is really uncomfortable. Hope I could get over it before midterm..

Midterm...

Midterm is around the corner. Even though I major in economics, I also have to take courses in CALCULUS and ACCOUNTING.

As I mentioned before, mathematics is a nightmare to me. So far as I know, calculus IS mathematics. I always have difficulty understanding what the teacher has said during the classes. Therefore, I'm deeply concerned about my calculus exam...

As for accounting, I had no idea what it is about several weeks ago. Gradually, I figured it out. I even think it interesting to study accounting!

In case of economics, luckily, I find it an interesting subject. Since I major in economics, I have to pay even more attention to this subject!

Wish me good luck, wish me "ALL PASS" !!!

HW (SUMMIT p.5)

8. Don't forget to be polite when meeting people.
9. Remember to finish you job on time.
10.Don't forget any appointment and always be on time.

New Life

Time flies! It's November now! It's hard to believe that I've become a freshman for almost 2 months!!

I have to admit that I was a little upset when I learned that I would become a student of NTPU, not to mention to major in ECONOMICS, for math has been my nightmare for several years!!! However, I'm glad to say that I'm having fun now!

There are about 120~130 students in the department of economics. It's such a big department that I cannot memorize every one of them; nevertheless, I did make some good friends here. Since I attended a girls' senior high school, I wasn't sure if I could get along well with boys. Well, this question sounds silly now because I'm sure that I love my new life!

My new school life has just started. I'm looking forward to live it to the fullest!

Homework 3 (CEEP 1.1)

According to my CEEP (Homework 1), I should have done several things. However...

1. I did watch CNN in the morning, but not every morning. Sometimes I link to their website (http://edition.cnn.com/) and take a look at the latest news. There are also some videos on their website.

2. I haven't had a chance to talk to foreigners. Maybe I should try that so called "English Corner" some time.

3. I did read the English magazine Advanced for a few days, but did not keep on reading it. Maybe I should read it right after finish typing the blog!

4. Well, I didn't write any English diaries or English essays in these days...

What a shame that I barely follow the plans I have made...

My English Level In CEF

I think my English level in CEF is between B2 and C1.

READING part :
Sometimes I read New York Times in 聯合報. I may not know every single words in the newspaper, but I know what the articles are about. Similarly, when I read novels, even though there are always some new words to me, I know what the characters had said or done, and I think that's enough to me. All I need now is to learn more words, which enables me to understand the articles faster and more precisely.

LISTENING part :
When I watch HBO (or CINEMAX, and so on), I not only read the Chinese subtitles on TV screen but also pay attention to the terms they use in their conversations. I often find some interesting terms which are composed of several easy words! Also, I enjoy listening to music. Instead of reading the lyrics, I always listen carefully to the singers and try to figure out what they are singing. Usually, I can get 80% correct in my guessing. (It's an interesting game!)

Due to these reasons, I think my English level in CEF is between B2 and C1.

My Comprehensive English Enhancement Plan for 2007-2008 School Year

Since English is an international language, I made several plans to improve my English ability.

First, I would watch CNN every morning before going to school. In this way, I can not only improve my listening ability but also know what is happening around the world.

Second, even though I don't have any foreign friends, I would grab some chances to talk to foreigners on the road. It sounds interesting to talk to strangers!

Then, I would read some English magazines like Advanced to improve my reading ability and to learn more vocabularies. After all, the more words I know, the easier it will be to read English articles.

Also, if possible, I would write either English diaries or English essays frequently (maybe 2~3 times a week), since WRITING is the weakest ability among these four abilities (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) to me.

These are just the plans I made. I hope I could reach these goals!!
